Difference Between Plastering and Putty — What Goes First and Why

Most homeowners in Indore use both terms interchangeably. Some contractors skip one altogether to save time and cost. Both are mistakes that show up as uneven walls, poor paint adhesion, and peeling paint within the first monsoon.
Here's what each one actually is, what it does, and the exact order they go in.
What Is Plastering?

Plastering is the first coat that goes on a raw brick or block wall after masonry is complete.
It is a thick layer — typically 12–15 mm — made of cement, sand, and water. Its job is structural, not cosmetic:
Covers the rough, uneven surface of the brick or block wall.
Creates a hard, flat base strong enough to hold everything that comes after.
Provides basic protection against moisture penetration.
Fills the gaps between bricks and evens out the wall surface.
Without plastering, your wall is just exposed brickwork. No amount of putty or paint can compensate for skipping this step.
Types used in Indore homes:
Cement plaster (most common) — cement + sand mix, durable, suitable for both interior and exterior walls.
Gypsum plaster — faster setting, no curing needed, increasingly used for interior walls in Indore; lighter and crack-resistant but not suitable for wet areas or exterior surfaces.
What Is Wall Putty?

Wall putty is a thin, fine finishing material applied over dried plaster — never directly on raw brick.
It is made of white cement, polymers, and minerals. Applied in 1–2 thin coats of 1–2 mm each. Its job is purely cosmetic and adhesion-related:
Fills hairline cracks and surface pores in the plaster.
Creates an ultra-smooth, even surface for paint.
Improves paint adhesion — paint grips putty far better than bare plaster.
Enhances the final paint finish — without putty, paint looks dull and uneven.
Putty adds zero structural strength. It is a surface preparation material, nothing more.
Two types used in Indore:
Cement-based putty — suitable for both interior and exterior walls, water resistant, better for Indore's monsoon humidity.
Acrylic putty — ready to use, smoother finish, interior walls only, not suitable for damp or exterior areas.
The Correct Sequence — No Shortcuts

This is the order that every wall in your Indore home must follow:
Step 1 — Masonry complete Brickwork or block work finished, joints filled.
Step 2 — Plastering 12–15 mm cement plaster applied in one or two coats. Surface levelled and finished with a straight edge. Curing required for minimum 7 days — keep the plastered surface wet. In Indore's summer, plastered walls dry out fast — curing is not optional here.
Step 3 — Drying time Plaster must be fully dry and cured before putty is applied. Minimum 21–28 days for cement plaster. Applying putty over damp plaster is the single most common reason paint peels in Indore homes.
Step 4 — Primer coat A wall primer is applied over dry plaster before putty in most professional finishing sequences. Primer seals the plaster surface, reduces putty absorption, and improves adhesion. Skipping primer is a common cost-cutting move that reduces durability.
Step 5 — Wall putty Applied in 1–2 thin coats. Each coat sanded smooth after drying. Total putty thickness should not exceed 3–4 mm — thick putty layers crack.
Step 6 — Final primer A second primer coat over putty before paint. This is the paint-ready surface.
Step 7 — Paint 2 coats of emulsion. Top coat after first coat is fully dry.
What Contractors Skip — and What It Costs You

Skipping putty entirely — Paint goes directly on plastered walls. The surface looks acceptable for 6 months. Then: uneven patches, paint absorption differences, and a textured look that only gets worse. Repainting without putty just repeats the same result.
Applying putty over damp plaster — The most common cause of paint peeling in Indore. Moisture trapped under putty has nowhere to go. It pushes the putty layer off the wall, taking paint with it. Always confirm plaster has dried for 21–28 days before putty is applied.
Skipping primer — Putty absorbs too much paint in the first coat, leaving a patchy finish. Second coat doesn't fix it. You end up using more paint and getting a worse result.
Using acrylic putty on exterior walls — Acrylic putty is not waterproof. Indore's 4-month monsoon will lift it off exterior surfaces within one season. Always use cement-based putty on exterior walls.
Thick putty in one coat — Putty applied more than 2 mm thick in a single coat shrinks as it dries and cracks. Apply thin coats, sand between them.
What to Specify in Your Agreement

Before construction begins, make sure your contractor's agreement clearly states:
Plastering thickness — 12 mm internal, 15 mm external (two coats for external walls).
Cement grade for plaster mix — typically 1:4 or 1:6 cement:sand ratio.
Curing period — minimum 7 days for plaster before putty begins.
Drying period — minimum 21 days after plastering before putty application.
Putty type — cement-based for exterior, interior damp areas; acrylic acceptable for dry interior rooms.
Number of putty coats — minimum 2 coats, sanded between each.
Primer — two coats, one before putty and one after.
Vague specifications like "plastering and putty as required" leave everything to the contractor's discretion — which usually means the cheapest, fastest approach.
The Indore Climate Factor
Indore's summer dries plaster faster than ideal — which sounds helpful but isn't. Rapid drying without curing causes plaster to shrink and crack before putty is applied. These cracks then telegraph through putty and paint, appearing as hairline lines on your finished walls.
Indore's monsoon tests every weak point in the plaster-putty-paint sequence. Any shortcut taken during construction shows up during the first or second monsoon — seepage, peeling, and staining that requires costly redoing of walls.
The sequence — plaster, cure, dry, prime, putty, prime, paint — exists for a reason. Every step was put there because skipping it causes a specific, predictable problem.

The rule: Plaster first, always. Putty only after plaster is fully cured and dry. Never reverse the order, never skip a step, never rush the drying time.
